Caladesi Island State Park – Voted one of Dr. Beach's best beaches, Caladesi Island State Park is a barrier island nestled between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Ride the ferry over to the island. Look for dolphins escorting your ferry through the waters of the Tampa Bay. Sun on sugary white sand beaches. Pick up postcards and aerial photos of the island at the gift shop.


Canoe Escape – Rent a canoe or kayak to ply the waters of this 16,000-acre preserve, located minutes from downtown Tampa. Hire a guide to point out flora and fauna in this rich wildlife sanctuary. Kayak, spotting deer, wild hog and turkey along the way. Spy alligators sunning on the banks of the river.


Championship Golf – Perfect your game at one of several championship golf courses. Get a foursome together for a round at Westchase Golf Course, recognized by Golf Digest for its superior service and quality. Take private lessons to lower your par. Make a day of it at the challenging 18-hole course at Babe Zaharias Golf Club. Named for the Olympic athlete, Babe Zaharias purchased the club in 1949. Improve your shot on this course, offering play for all levels of golfers, just minutes from downtown Tampa. Tee off from one of two nine-hole courses.


Fort DeSoto Beach Park – Though the fort never witnessed actual battle, it was surveyed by Robert E. Lee during the Civil War. It was constructed during the Spanish-American War and later, served as a practice site for the pilot who dropped the Hiroshima bomb. Go bird-watching. Explore the old fort. Set up your tent in one of the bayside campsites. Catch your dinner from one of two fishing piers. Jog, skate or bike miles of paved trails.


Hillsborough River State Park – Designated as one of the first state parks in 1936, the Hillsborough River meanders through a variety of landscapes. Figure out which house along its suburban shores catches your fancy. Wave to passersby on the bridges overhead. Make your way into downtown Tampa. Anchor your boat and drop a fishing line.


Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park Hop on a tram ride along the Pepper Creek Trail. Traverse the boardwalk, viewing wildlife like cougars, bears, bobcats, otters, deer, alligators and a wide variety of wading birds, birds of prey and songbirds along the way. Watch gentle manatees glide through the water. Saddle up and enjoy the serenity of equestrian trails throughout the park. Rent some tubes and float down the river. Participate in a wildlife encounter program.
